Pea Puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) – 3 Pack, Tiny Puffer, Big Personality
Its place in your tank: micro-predator for a heavily planted species tank.
The smallest puffer, with the biggest personality
The pea puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus), or dwarf puffer, comes from southwestern India and grows to only about an inch. It hovers and turns its eyes independently, inspects everything in the tank and often learns to recognize the person who feeds it. It is a real predator in miniature.
The problem
Pea puffers are often sold as community fish. In a sparse tank with flake food and fancy-finned tankmates, they nip fins, fight each other and slowly starve because they refuse dry food.
How it fits the Father Fish Method
Father Fish has kept fish for more than 70 years, and his method has helped thousands of aquarists build tanks that run on biology instead of bottles. A layer of living soil (Aqua Preta Complete Substrate) sits under a sand cap, the tank is planted heavily from day one, and the plants, soil and tiny life in them keep the water balanced without chemicals. In a living tank, pea puffers hunt small snails and microfauna through the plants all day, and the dense growth breaks up their line of sight so rival males leave each other alone.
Your plan
- Get the tank ready. Use a heavily planted tank of at least 10 gallons for three puffers, mature for at least 2 months and ideally with a healthy population of small snails. Keep it as a species tank, or add only small, fast, short-finned fish or otocinclus. No shrimp.
- Acclimate slowly. With the lights off, float the bag, then drip or add small amounts of tank water over 30 to 60 minutes. Net the fish into the tank and never pour bag water in.
- Keep them thriving. Feed live or frozen foods daily (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, blackworms), plus small snails often to wear down their ever-growing teeth. Expect them to ignore flakes and pellets.
What you get
- 3 pea puffers
Care at a glance
- Scientific name: Carinotetraodon travancoricus
- Adult size: about 1 inch
- Minimum tank: 10 gallons for 3, heavily planted
- Temperature: 74–82°F
- pH: 7.0–8.0
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive; males fight, and they nip fins
- Group size: a single fish, a pair, or 1 male with 2 or more females
- Diet: Carnivore; live and frozen foods and small snails. Usually refuses dry food.
- Swims in: All levels, mostly among plants
- Difficulty: Moderate (needs live or frozen food and a dedicated tank)
Why it matters
Kept like ordinary community fish, pea puffers starve or fight. In a dense, living tank of their own they are among the most rewarding fish you can keep.
FAQ
- Are they shrimp-safe? No. They will hunt shrimp, especially babies.
- Will they eat flakes? Almost never. Plan on frozen or live food every day.
- Will they clear my snails? Small snails, yes. That is good for their teeth. Large snails are safe.
- Can I keep them with other fish? Only with care. Otocinclus or small, quick fish can work, but long-finned or slow fish will be nipped.
