Its job in your tank: a complete day-one planting for 35–75 gallons.

A full, balanced planting for a big tank.

Twenty-eight plants: a background wall of swords and four kinds of val, a midground of crypts and sagittaria, fast stems to soak up nutrients, and a bulb, fern, anubias and floater to finish. Vals, swords and bulb plants are also Father Fish's picks for cichlid tanks.

How it fits the Father Fish Method

Father Fish has kept fish for more than 70 years, and his method has helped thousands of aquarists build tanks that run on biology instead of bottles. A layer of living soil (Aqua Preta Complete Substrate) sits under a sand cap and feeds rooted plants for years. You plant heavily on day one and skip the CO2, liquid fertilizers and root tabs. Then the plants, the soil and the tiny life in them balance the tank. This pack gives you that full mix in one order, sized for a large tank.

Father Fish says: "Start a new tank with stems and vals. Big plants in the back, small in the front. Plant heavily at the start."

What's in the pack (28 plants)

  • 4 sword plants
  • 2 jungle val
  • 2 red jungle val
  • 2 corkscrew val
  • 2 Italian val
  • 6 stem plants
  • 4 Cryptocoryne
  • 2 dwarf sagittaria
  • 1 bulb plant
  • 1 fern
  • 1 anubias
  • 1 floating plant

Your plan

  1. Build the base. About 1 inch of Aqua Preta under 2 inches of sand. In very large tanks, use about 1.5 inches of Aqua Preta under 3 inches of sand.
  2. Plant everything on day one. Vals and swords form the background, crypts and sag go in front, the bulb gets its own spot, and the fern and anubias go on wood or rock. Rooted plants go about 1 inch into the sand, never into the soil.
  3. Leave the cap alone and let the soil feed the roots.

New-tank lighting: run the lights 24 hours a day for the first 4 days, then 10–12 hours a day.

About substitutions: Packs are made up in advance, so we can't take requests for specific plants. If a plant is out of stock, we swap in a similar plant of equal or greater value.
