Extra Large Sponge Filter, 8 inch – Air-Driven Biological Filter for Big Planted Tanks
Big-tank filtration that doesn't fight your ecosystem.
An extra-large sponge filter gives beneficial bacteria and microfauna a huge surface to live on. It moves water gently, so it won't blow plants around or pull in fry and shrimp.
The problem
Big canister and hang-on filters create strong currents and pull in shrimp and fry. Their media also needs replacing. In a natural tank, most of the filtration is already happening in the soil, plants and biofilm. You need gentle circulation and a bacteria home, not a jet engine.
The Father Fish way
Sponge filters are Lou's standard in natural tanks: simple, cheap to run, safe for babies, and nothing to replace.
Your plan
- Add air. Connect any standard air pump with airline tubing and a check valve.
- Place it in a back corner. You can bury the base in the sand cap to anchor it. Keep it out of the soil layer.
- Squeeze it in tank water every month or so. Never rinse it under tap water, because that kills the bacteria.
What you get
- 1 extra large sponge filter, 8 inches
- Works with any air pump
- Air pump, tubing and check valve not included
Why it matters
The wrong filter means sucked-up fry, blasted plants and more maintenance. A big sponge quietly does the job for years.
FAQ
- Does it need an air pump? Yes. Any air pump works. The pump, tubing and check valve are sold separately.
- Can I bury the base? Yes, in the sand cap. Keep it out of the soil layer.
- How do I clean it? Squeeze it in old tank water, never under the tap.
- How big a tank? It's our largest sponge. Very large tanks often run two.
