Food small enough for fish that just hatched.

Newly hatched fry of tetras, rainbowfish, gouramis and killifish have mouths too small for baby brine shrimp. Rotifers are microscopic animals of about 100–340 microns, and they're what those fry eat first in nature. This frozen rotifer feeds them straight from your freezer.

The problem

The first few days after the yolk sac runs out are when most fry starve. Culturing live rotifers takes time and gear most hobbyists don't have.

The Father Fish way

In a mature Father Fish tank the microfauna already feed fry. Frozen rotifers are a backup and a supplement for when you need more food, or you're raising fry in a separate tank.

Your plan

  1. Keep it frozen. Store it in your freezer and put any unused portion back right away.
  2. Break off a tiny piece. Give only what fry eat in 2–3 minutes, several times a day.
  3. Step up as they grow. Move on to baby brine shrimp or fine powdered food once the fry can take it.

What you get

  • 2 oz cup of frozen rotifers
  • Frozen whole rotifers. They're not alive, so they drift rather than swim.
  • Ships frozen with a cold pack, Monday to Wednesday. If it arrives thawed, put it straight back in the freezer.

Why it matters

Miss the first-food window and a whole spawn can be lost. With the right-sized food ready in the freezer, more of your fry make it.

Keep a cup in your freezer before your next spawn. For live first foods, pair it with our Live Microfauna Culture.

FAQ

  • Are they alive? No. They're frozen whole rotifers. For live food, see our Live Microfauna Culture.
  • How much do I feed? A tiny amount, several times a day. Remove leftovers, which foul small fry tanks.
  • How is it shipped? Frozen, with a cold pack, Monday to Wednesday.
  • What if it thaws in transit? Refreeze it as soon as it arrives.
